So You Want to Be A Champion Dancer? Checklist

So, you want to be a champion Irish dancer?

First understand what you are committing to. You will have to be disciplined. To be careful what you eat. To practice when your non-dancing friends want you to do something else. That’s if you have non-dancing friends!
You’ll have to train, on cold mornings and warm evenings, whether you feel like it or not. You will have to give up things you like, to be amazing at the thing you love. Dancing.
You may have set backs. You may hurt your ankle or twist your knee. Or you may fall. But you will get up. You may not win but you’ll come back. Because that is what a dancer is.
So. To help you do what you want to do and to be the best you can, here some simple tips.

Champion Checklist
• Before upcoming competitions – try morning skips before school. Starting off at a certain number and gradually adding more and more each day and watch your fitness levels rise quickly!
• Eat healthily – especially on the day of competition! Irish dancers training regime is so intense and strict- this must reflect in your eating habits. Make sure to fuel your body correctly in order to perform at your best.
• Home practice – The best achievers actually take on board all advice from teachers and correct what needs fixed. They perfect their steps. If this isn’t being carried out at home, dancers go back to class with the same problems – teachers get fed up pointing out the same problems and the dancer will not progress. Basically, listen and do what your teachers ask – they know best!
• Be your own competition- always aim for a higher place than you were last year. Don’t get caught up on who beat you, you beat them etc.- focus on beating your own personal best – you will grow so much as a dancer.
• We can all be our own worst critic. Give yourself praise for the good things you do.
